Here is list of procrastination opportunities if you ever decide to work in Calcutta --
Mid-Oct - Invocation of the Goddess (Durga Devi)
3rd-week of Oct - Main Durga Puja days (city wide block party with displays)
Oct late - Worship of Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi (how can you make wealth if you do not work I wonder
myself).
Also mixed in are Muslim holidays.
In addition to mythological goddesses we have a "real life goddess", the opposition party leader who has
called for a 2-day stoppage of work.
Week-1 Nov - Worship of Goddess Kali (fireworks all over)
Week-2 Nov - Brother's day. All brothers will get to eat Bengali delicacies prepared by their loving
sisters.
Dec-end Christmas and New Year’s Day.
2nd-week-Jan - Worship of the goddess of education.
After all this the people return to their normal work schedule.
Comic Book Heroes, Japanimation, & Durga Puja
Most of the comic book heroes lead double lives, from Superman to Spiderman (grad school student when not fighting crime). Then we have Japanese animation figures that look like teen cute girls, but turn into
fighting machines on the slightest provocation.
I think Indian mythology started all of this. Goddess Durga is the wife of Lord Shiva (major god). She has a full family life with 4 kids namely Ganeesha, Kartik, Lakshmi and Saraswati (minor gods). Now again she has another side to her. When asked by the forces of good to fight the evil ones, she turns into a ten-armed
fighting machine with a multitude of weapons.
