Bedwen Restaurant Chain
Everywhere in Asia you will find misspellings. Common English words are morphed and it is scary if you have a work life that demands language perfection. In the Bangkok grocery chain TOPS, I found the "salmon fly" (salmon fry), I tried to get the staff to correct the spelling but they insisted that it was the fly. I feel they could have as well named it the "Spanish fly" and boosted their sales.
The name "bedwin" has morphed from the word "Bedouin" (Arabic Nomads). The logic behind this is that the foods are Muslim based or what we call in India Mughlai. Mughlai foods came with the Mughols (Muslims descendents of Cheghis Khan around 1400) who overran/ruled India (~200 years) and brought with them the rich food styles among other things.
They (bedwen chain) are famous for their biryani (spicy, meat mixed rice), and rolls (wraps). My menu choices always stay staple, I always test the dal and roti in any restaurant I go to, Sangita asked for the
roll. They informed her that the roll will not be available in the upper floor location; she will have to go to the street side to get that.
I found my roti, dal, and rice all cold, the fish was so-so. We then went down to the street level to try the rolls. I felt that the hygiene was questionable, plus we experienced the runs later that day. The pricing was reasonable, their thalis were a good bargain if you are ok with modest portions (definitely non-American standards).
Tollywood (Screen restaurant)
Our parent’s apartment is in Tollygonge. This area is the center for Bengali movie studios. When Bollywood started to gain more popularity Tollywood suffered. So many of the studios in Tollygonge were converted to factories & sold off, now there is a resurgence of Bengali films & so the studios are back.
The area is nowhere like Hollywood, but there is a restaurant here that has used the movie theme for it's
interior decoration (billboards, and other movie making equipment). Our parents like this place, especially my dad as he gets to see some of the Tolloywood celebrities (female).
The foods were pricy and the curries were a little heavy. The place opens late and closes after lunch and
opens again for dinner. Taste was average. |
